Who Can Buy Ammunition in New York

New York does not issue an ammunition card, but it gates every commercial purchase behind a point-of-sale background check run through the New York State Police statewide database. To buy, you must be an eligible purchaser, present a valid New York State driver's license or non-driver ID, and clear the check. Out-of-state IDs are not accepted for ammunition transactions in New York.

Age requirements

You must be 18 or older to buy rifle and shotgun ammunition and 21 or older for handgun ammunition. New York also requires buyers to be 21 to purchase semi-automatic rifles, which is a firearm rule but frequently relevant to the same shoppers.
